Thumbs Down Purpose and Etiquette

I am trying to get a better understanding of the purpose of the thumbs down button and the protocol in this community specifically. I'm hoping to steer clear of personally identifiable examples and focus on general experiences/ perceptions.

Some thought starters:

  1. How do you perceive the purpose of the Thumbs Down button in Open Forum, Sprints or Boards?
  2. Have you ever hit Thumbs Down on a fellow community members' post? Why?
  3. If you haven't used Thumbs Down, yet, why not?
  4. Do you think Thumbs Down is constructive to the discussion without a supporting comment? If, yes please explain?
  5. Have you ever had a post receive a Thumbs Down? If so, what did you receive it to mean?

All other thoughts are welcome!

One particular board I am a member on has been inflicted with someone giving other members 'thumbs down'. It's impossible to track who is doing this but it frustrates everyone.

I feel that there should be an option to disagree with a post but it has to have a reason behind it. By all means hit that button but there should then be a text box requiring justification.

I have never used this button and prefer to judicious use of 'thumbs up' when I see a well researched and reasoned post.

Also, does thumbs up/down have different meanings in different cultures?

David Cottrell thank you for your response. this has been my experience as well. it's left me quite perturbed that as professionals we can't openly voice out disagreement or questions regarding a colleague post. I like your suggestion of a text box for added context. simply thumbs downing is NOT constructive to debate, analysis or knowledge creation. I'm curious as well re: cultural differences - Jahnia 71 months ago
