Hotels Beach Security

Sousse attack at the beach has demonstrated how easy it is for just one man to kill several people without being stopped.
In many countries that are tourist destinations around the world private guardians are unarmed, the areas they have to control are vast and the overall security level in the hospitality sector is very basic.
There are many technologies in the security field, but to secure the beach and the shore, the most efficient and the least expensive ones would be the optimal choice.
If you had to design a new security system for the beach, what ideas would you come up with? Please, do not feel constrained by the current state of the art or existing products, feel free to express your ideas whatever they may be and regardless if they may even appear too futuristic at first. Some of the points you may want to address could be whether the technology be: concealed or visible, passive or active defense, automatic or man-operated, etc.

Problem: In many countries that are tourist destinations around the world, private guardians are unarmed; the areas they have to control are vast and the overall security level in the hospitality sector is very basic.
Assessment: Design a new security system for the beach. Technology may be concealed or visible, passive or active defense, automatic or man-operated, etc.
Maintaining security over people that are supposed to be on site is easier to manage than those that are not permitted.
Current technology uses coded key cards for guests to access permitted areas on site. If the card is lost or stolen a new card has to be issued with a new code. Most resorts, regardless of size, provide employee cards that are coded with designated access areas also.
Possible technology solutions will require high cyber security to protect identity theft and organizational hacking. Cell phones are the one device that almost everyone has.

  • Phones can be used to track individuals (guests, staff and vendors) on the property access areas on premises
  • Most people have a cell phone, by registering the cell phone number when checking in to the hotel (which will identify the mobile IP tracking number) it can be used to run a background check on the person with the phone to track criminal history.
  • Have guests take picture when checking in, run the photo, guest's name and driver license, (as most guests will have a driver's license) in their respective state where issued. This system will allow the establishment to access the state issued license to verify photo identity.
  • Photonic technology is used for 3D mapping. While video cameras are just about every, the use of photonic sensors can sense movement through measurement of millions of points per second and allows sensors to see not just where objects are but what they are — even at distance.

Thank you Isabella for your contribution. Coded key cards, photo ID etc for guests to access permitted areas on site doesn't works on the opens beach area and on the shore. The new security system should works in any country and not just in the USA. - Anna 85 months ago

This is a most challenging issue for our present day world. Terrorist will always find a way to do physical damage all we can do is to provide as many barriers to dsirupt such behavior yet minimzing the beach goers experiences. Barriers to entry could be one opportunity to check people before entering the beach , on site beach guards, police posts and be observant.
The more prevalent trained people are at the beach the better is the securement of that beach. The lifeguard has been the stable security for beach safety for years but now it has become much more aggressive.

Thank you Jeff for you contribution. Because you are so knowledge and experience person and I hope you can bring some innovative idea. I would like you think out of the box come with some creative idea also if it is something doesn't exit yet. If you was for example an officer of Stars Trek movies how you would take care to the security on the beach hotels ?

The challenge is to create effective security barriers without making them so oppressive that it meaningfully detracts from the guest's experience. As with most deterrents, adding multiple layers of security can discourage the vast majority of intruders. However, a determined securtiy breacher will find a way to get through.
So, the challenge is two-fold: (1) deter admittance of a beach resort from the beach, (2) deter access to the resort beach property from the sea and or adjacent beach.
I like the concept of using guest biometric inputs to address the first challenge. I would suggest use of motion sensor triggered cameras with CCTV feed to security services to detect attempts to access from an adjacent beach.

Thank you Micheal for your contribution. Can I ask how you will delay the entry of a Shooter on the beach? CCTV can detect and we need them but we need also to delay the entry of the Terrorist almost 45 second. Any idea? Some beach are huge and we have to think also to securize the shore. Remember the guard are unarmed. - Anna 85 months ago
Hi Anne, it is a tricky problem as you know. Invasion of any target will be likely from its weakest point. So, solutions that tighten beach security will challenge other entry points (e.g. one could parasail onto a hotel roof). This said, the entire beach area adjacent to a resort could be built on a platform with blocks that rapidly raise/lower based on motion detection, trapping intruders. - Michael 85 months ago

  1. Fencing with perimeter intrusion protection
  2. This is a basic method that is commercially available with rugged sensors
  3. Night vision cameras mounted in outdoor with IP
  4. This is also available with DVR
  5. 3.Visitor/Guest management through web for checking credentials before granting admission.
  6. 4.Vehicle entry pass management
  7. 5.Watch tower with thermographic cameras to spot intrusion or terrorist attacks

All the above are , in addition to armed guards/police..
