Data desensitization or anonymisation is a common practise to deal with Personal Identifying Information (PII). Among the most common techniques to remove sensitive information from datasets there are:
- suppression (removal of non relevant fields from a dataset)
- generalization (ex. replacement of birth date with age group)
- aggregation (provide data about groups rather than related to single individuals) and outliers removals (removal from the dataset of individuals belonging to groups too small in size)
In spite of the fact of data desensitization being around for a while, very good knowledge of the data and a very careful data treatment are required.
