Big data vs. patient privacy

Is there an effective case that can be made to individual patients that encourages them to share personal medical information in service of improving patient outcomes for many others? What systems does industry need to put in place to guard private patient information while still allowing the collection and effective use of this data?

Data desensitization or anonymisation is a common practise to deal with Personal Identifying Information (PII). Among the most common techniques to remove sensitive information from datasets there are:

  • suppression (removal of non relevant fields from a dataset)
  • generalization (ex. replacement of birth date with age group)
  • aggregation (provide data about groups rather than related to single individuals) and outliers removals (removal from the dataset of individuals belonging to groups too small in size)

In spite of the fact of data desensitization being around for a while, very good knowledge of the data and a very careful data treatment are required.
Bad mistakes have been made in the past, as the following links explain, and we want to be careful in order not to repeat them.

Rock Health research shows that people tend to trust goverenment more than private companies, and insurance + pharma companies are least trusted. "The medium is the message" is a phrase coined by fellow Canadian, Marshall McLuhan. It is especailly visible in the new domains. How consumers pereceive the reason behind the ask shapes their response.
