Use of AI in Process Safety

The application of AI in application of Process Safety Systems and Safety Instrumented Systems may offer significant opportunity to improvement in Operational Performance and Reliability. However would the Process industry be prepared to implement this new technology ? Can implementation rely solely on the intended User Experience ? Would International Application/User Databases be available to Users that would enhance AI Application ? Are International Standards being developed to allow for "Approval" by Standards Bodies, Insurers, Safety Institutions ?

Hi Steve welcome. The revised ISO standards,British and API Best Practices are some of the standards already alluding to a systems based approach to assessing hazards in various components of process flow streams This is done via identifying nodes and systems breakdown to evaluate the sub-systems via brainstorming, what if? analysis to detrmine levels of risk criticality of various sub-systems. The AI and associated technology is appropriate for responding to the challenges aforementioned.

I would be concerned that AI as applied to monitoring decision making systems where situationally learned events might cause problems if the AI portion incoorectly interprets the monitoring. It is one thing for a system to monitor, quite another whenAI is applied to operational controls. - Sandy 66 months ago
I am thinking that artificial intelligence is faster, shaper and more preise in response than natural intelligence shall ever be. - Glenroy 66 months ago
