Forty years of field experience as a manager, executive, and CEO and nine years of teaching at a major public university. I have a wealth of practical knowledge to share. I have sailed through calm seas and stormy weather in large companies and in startups. I have lots of scars to prove it and real life stories to tell to help others achieve success. This is why I have chosen to teach at the university level.
Let me share four ideas that can affect your personal and professional success.
•The public believes businessmen have no moral fiber and lack integrity. Lack of integrity renders all success in life meaningless. Personal and business integrity are the same. It is essential that we live our life in the light of day with uncompromising integrity.
•CEOs need to devote as much time understanding the function of the balance sheet as they do the income statement. They need to understand whether the investment their company makes in various asset classes is at the correct level, and they need to understand how those assets will be funded. Sales growth can only occur when the balance sheet supports that growth.
•Easy-to-use tools to allow the CEO to monitor and forecast the company’s cash needs on a real time basis. This is true for short term and the long term visibility. Effective use of these tools allows the CEO to predict cash crises and adjust before a situation become critical.
•Developing a strategic plan is fairly easy. It becomes cloudy when the terms used are not understood by everyone in the organization. Use short, directive statements telling what you do and what you do not do. Make them easy to remember and teach everyone how to use them to respond in any business situation. The plan should be dynamic and should be refined as business situations change.
If your company has reached the stage where you can use help in becoming a better leader and in making better decisions to achieve better results, let me hear from you.
