I am an Associate Professor at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (ANU), and conduct research in the broad area of Pattern Recognition and Pathology. Our research activity in virology and immunology has moved in silico, with the development of knowledge discovery (specifically "pattern-recognition") techniques to support the study of human susceptibility or resistance to disease post viral infection. Broader questions on fundamental pathology and diagnostics are also explored.
These investigations will assist in the translation of fundamental biomedical research into clinical decision-making via enhanced laboratory diagnosis. A range of data-mining and machine learning approaches are applied, with recent efforts investigating the integration of systematic review to enhance the quality of evidence, and solve biomedical questions . These statistical and knowledge discovery methods applied to mass human data will also augment our capacity to pursue fundamental biomedical research, and translate discoveries, without the need for animal models.
