Researcher in evolutionary biology and molecular ecology, having been working specifically on: i) population genetics and insecticide resistance in insect vectors of dengue and malaria; ii) population genetics and evolution of drug resistance in the malaria parasite; iii) conservation genetics of endangered species.
I have co-authored 96 works including one book chapter and 22 papers in international peer reviewed journals, which received 665 citations, providing an h-index of 11. I have participated in 20 research projects. Seven of those were international. I was assistant manager of one national project. Until 2013, I have been the PI of a project entitled “Past and present population genetics of the vector Aedes aegypti: a tool for dengue control policies”. Presently, I am coordinating the project "Urban Malaria in Africa: new insights into social, geographic and vector population genetics factors".
I graduated in Biology in 1998 and completed my PhD in Evolutionary Biology in 2007 at the University of Lisbon. Since 1998, I was awarded four fellowships and three travel grants. This allowed me to develop a wide network with 10 research teams around the world (Europe, North and South America and Africa). Moreover, I gained laboratory and data analysis expertise, management skills and field experience with several animal groups (namely birds, fish, bats and insects). I have been co-supervisor of three Master students, three graduate students and four undergraduate students, and trained 20 national and international researchers (including PhD students and Post-Docs) in laboratory work and population genetic analysis. I have lectured in a PhD program, degree courses and advanced trainings in several Universities (in Portugal and Brazil). I have been a project reviewer for the Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and a peer reviewer for 11 different international scientific journals.
