Is there a safer alternative to Methylisothiazolinone?

Methylisothiazolinone is a widely-used preservative in many personal care products, specifically many hair care products. It has been associated with lung toxicity, allergic reactions and possible neurotoxicity. The European Union ban Methylisothiazolinone as preservatives in leave-on cosmetic products in 2016. However, it is not banned in the United States yet. How do we get the US to eliminate the use of Methylisothiazolinone in personal care products, specifically hair care? Is there a safer alternative manufacturers can use instead of this harmful preservative?

Melissa, your question as pertains to "how do we get the US to eliminate the use of Methylisothiazolinone in personal care products, specifically hair care?" is probably best addressed by a regulatory expert. To your question about safer alternatives, here's some options to consider: http://www.iscauk.com/MI_free_cosmetic_preservatives.php

If you would like to research your question beyond this, a more comprehensive technology search may be appropriate (FYI, it's what my company does).

Actually we have had great success with Bio-Vert, which is a sugar based preservative. Utilizing phenoyehtanol and Bio-Vert in tandem we have been quite successful as long as the end formulation does not get to acidic.
