Board composition

The appointment of a board of directors for any organization demands careful review and balance with regards to the KSAAs of members vis-a-vis the set goals and KPIs which is expected to change from time-to-time.
Top priority attributes should include: embodiment of the spirit and letter of the organization, commitment to the vision and mission statements, team building and coordination, integrity, emotional intelligence and servant leadership, responsible corporate behaviour, supportive of financial growth, proactive learning, regular participation at meetings, dedication to committee assignments, motivational drive and resourcefulness.
I think this depends largely on the kind of organization. Is representation a key factor - demographic, psychographic and geographic attributes; Is public policy or visibility important - professional skills and attainment levels, partner or industry experience/exposure, ethical attributes, even leadership behavior attributes; fundraising needs - philanthropists, corporate leadership, mission based activists, people will to ask for money. I could go on... The point being make sure you understand and recruit for members who will serve the mission and growth strategy of the organization well. The key thing however is not to recruit a board where each member represents the same qualities or is to contribute the same way, but rather compose a board that together covers the gambit of what's needed, train and inform them about the plan for the whole group and them as an individual more specifically and use them strategically and thoughtfully in the pursuit of those goals as partners.
