A brand is anything helping consumers to distinguish products or organizations from competitors. It could be a name (Coca Cola), a logo (Swoosh), a symbol (Apple).
Then we could have many more descriptions and interpretation of this.

A brand is the definition of the organization.  It communicates the product or service in the shortest amount of time to the largest audience under best conditions.  As such it is the property of one organization and should be protected from use by anyone other than that organization.
