Making the topic understandable is the most important!!! Many physicians have difficulty "translating" into laymen terms what they are trying to tell patients. This is an important topic and needs to be understandable to the general public. Using pictures and models are normal and abnormal can be very effective in education. Also having written information available in foreign languages is also a must!
As a nurse with 28 years experience, I have seen these problems first hand. Many times a physician will explain something, leave the room and the patient/family asks the nurse to "translate". Patient satisfaction scores are a hot topic right now, and physicians must help in that process!
