What questions should corporate directors ask in the boardroom re: the current or potential impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on their companies?

At this point in time, the corporate director should educate the board that artificial intelligence WILL disrupt their business model and market. There will be competition from known competitors and new fast movers using AI. The board must realize this first. The strategy analysis in the board should then focus on questions like: How can we use AI to generate new (additional) business models? How can AI create a new customer experience? How can AI create an entirely new use case for our products? How can we use AI to engage the market in new ways, e.g. find new customers or retain existing customers? How can we use AI to determine what customers really want/need as opposed to what we think they want or what we tell them to want? How can we use AI to produce our product faster, cheaper, on demand, more local, more individualized, etc.? How can we use AI to streamline production so it is more efficient and less dependant on human knowledge and experience?
The critical thing is for the board to realize is that they need to decide how to incorporate AI into the company or run the risk of the company disappearing.

How could AI disrupt our business model potentially?
Do we understand how AI could be used to disrupt us?
Are the entry barriers that we have towards others potentially overcome through AI?
What AI capabilities and awareness and skillset do we require to defend us?
Do we want to use AI to keep our market position (defensive), grow it (optimize), or use our current market position to attempt to disrupt ourselves before someone else does it?

I, too, think of this in a positive light:

  • How can we use AI to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness? (more agile business processes, more responsive customer care, while keeping operating costs down)
  • How can we use AI to personalise our products or services to each customer?
  • How can we use AI to mine data and identify patterns about the behaviours, preferences, and goals of our existing customers?
  • How can we use AI to mine data and identify new products and services that would appeal to our existing customers but also to draw new customers in?
