Commercial airlines and environmental impact of flying

Airlines are considering the opportunity to cut short flights to reduce the environmental impact. However, a round trip from London to New York generates roughly the same level of emissions as an average person does heating their home annually. Each new generation of airplanes will reduce the emissions, plus optimized routes, timetable and frequency could support too. Which could be the next solution? Electric and hybrid aircraft or alternative fuels? Any other option?

Carbon off-setting by the airlines? It would require many large forests but there has to be a way airline can offset their emissions like this.
