AI is a much broader field. Machine learning is a small component of it. I started working with Machine Learning (primitive form) back in 1990 with something called genetic algorithms. Due to the inability of processors to handle the workloads it went into hibernation for many years. Machine Learning is highly data sensitive, if you have bad data - you will get bad results. Garbage in- Garbage out.

AI, is like smart systems, Robotics, expert systems, LISP was a big programming language for AI in those days.

I have viewed AI as the overarching term for the application of technologies like machine learning, neural networks / deep learning, and data science. While these appear to be the 3 main applications and/or technologies, I'm certain there will be more added to the mix as these technologies evolve.
