Half of the world's prison population of about nine million is held in the US, China or Russia. Prison rates in the US are the world's highest, at 724 people per 100,000. In Russia the rate is 581. At 145 per 100,000, the imprisonment rate of England and Wales is at about the midpoint worldwide. So, now a question is when these individuals come back to the society and want to start their new life, how should we treat them. Isn't this our responsiblity to give them chance and help them in rebuilding their life? How should Government and Society work for them and give them jobs and make them part of new life.

There are a number of organisations that offer employment to ex-offenders in the UK. I'm a non-exec director at such an enterprise. Our experience is generally very good. The people are hard working and never complain.

The bigger questions is; does the crime committed effect attitudes to offenders?

Should someone that has been imprisoned for theft be allowed to handle money at their new employers?

David that;s a great cause you are part of. We need such organisaitons. About your questions, Yes, the attiutude of the offender does change and they do realise about their mistakes. However, it also depends on how they were treated in the lockup and how does the sociey treat them. Secondly, the employer needs to observe the indvidual, start giving him small amount and see how he reacts. - Masarrat A 61 months ago

Very interesting topic and good questions (and answers)!
My own question is...how about starting the reintroduction to their new life while they are in their final term in Prison? I'm sure it is more complicated than it sounds of course... Or not?

Totally agree with you Thanos, Jails do need to have programmes in place where they give them training and guide them what they want to do once they are out. Start them making responsible and teach them what they are passionate about. - Masarrat A 61 months ago

Very difficult to answer as there impact can be seen in current relationships, sexual preference and social relationships. The US experience with criminals is just unfolding and free prison labor will be deemed illegal as more governments will be found guilty of collusion with judges who recklessly put minorities and the poor behind bars.

The answer is yes. But maybe we should start earlier. The US represents ca. 4.4% of the world's population, but ca. 22% of the world's prisoners. We may assume that something is going wrong. Maybe that prisons are privately managed and due to this are good business? Biased judgments? Strict laws sending people too prison instead of trying other measures first?

It depends on the criminals that they done. I agreed that we need to give prisoner a new chance to rebuild their life. But, not prisoners deserve a second chance. I believe that rapist, drug dealer and killer should not deserve a new life in order to ensure the safety of the country.

The question is why they undertook such crime at first place, what made them do such a crime. We need to understand them and then take a call. - Masarrat A 61 months ago
