Low-calorie diet and health

Results of several studies have been published over time (most recently by Alicia Juliana Kowaltowski of Universidade de São Paulo (USP)), Instituto de Química (IQ), Brazil) indicating that low-calorie diets maintain health and extend life duration.
Question: do such low-calorie diets provide recommended daily doses of essential nutrients? Or are RDDs inaccurate or even irrelevant?

WHAT IS A CALORIE?

Calories are units of energy.

Various definitions exist but fall into two broad categories. Although these units are part of the metric system, they have been superseded in the International System of Units by the joule. One small calorie is approximately 4.2 joules (so one large calorie is about 4.2 kilojoules).

I found the link below to be an excellent compendium of research done on aging/longevity/life span extension!

The most pressing question now is whether these studies in worms, flies, and mice translate well to humans. Insulin signaling is a common link between all organisms looked at so far and so calorie restriction extending life span makes sense in that paradigm - Leonardo 63 months ago
