The Basic Non-Cognitive Competencies

Many of us have encountered a person who may intellectually be at upper levels, but whose ability to interact with others appears to that of one who is highly immature. THINK: Doctors.

This is the individual who is prone to becoming angry easily, verbally attacks co-workers, is perceived as lacking in compassion and empathy, and cannot understand why it is difficult to get others to cooperate with them and their agendas?

So - what about EQ in medicine, today? Low EQ and High IQ; etc.

Sadly, I think that Doctors still have a long way to go to develop the empathy and patience that patients want.

I was under the impression that medical schools were begining to teach classes in EQ skills. Do you think its taking hold?

Also, the fact that there are so many sites like rateMDs.com and Healthgrades.com may help give real time feedback to doctors about their patient's feelings

Social media is letting doctors know that there is a customer service business aspect to their roles, not just medical knowledge

EQ for Docs?

  • Medical school teaching EQ = No
  • Rating Sites = Meaningless
  • Social Medical = Pointless

Any idea why?
