Political Protectionism

What will be the longer term outcome of the protectionism seen in countries such as the USA and UK at the moment. POTUS wants to build the wall and the UK wants to take back control. Will either Government achieve these targets?

I think this is more than protectionism. It's a mix of political gain and sentiments. Let's address the problem first. In the case of USA, illegal immigration is a huge problem. What's the solution by POTUS - a wall. In my opinion - no way. Illegal immigration will stop by this, I doubt. For every wall, there is a ladder and a rope :).
What POTUS is trying to achieve is not national security but the political protection of himself through catalytic sentiments.
In case of UK, the arguments little differ. EU thing did not work for the UK quite well and both the parties are equally responsible for this. The UK is always dominant in Europe and EU is making them stand with the crowd. Also, the results are not in favor of UK. I would see it like "Ending a wrong marriage" then taking back control. However, seeing the drama in the UK, I wish the divorce could be handled better.

Protectionism is futile and misguided for any government. Globalization has reset the world order. To limit relations that empower the mobility of people, goods, and services as a policy is to isolate and inhibit politically. POTUS is living in the wrong century, inflicting economic and humanitarian damage at every turn. Unfortunately, protectionist tendencies can be found elsewhere as well. This retreat creates political islands (e.g., of like-minded authoritarians) and world disorder. It is also inherently anti-democratic. Nobody wins.

And ... China reportedly just offered to ramp up its US imports - Dr. David E. 64 months ago
So does that mean, for the moment, that both countries win? That protectionism is sound policy? What other indicators besides trade imbalance, are there? Thanks - Daryl 64 months ago

Not sure I follow. Why measure policy success as big or little win? it's go other dimensions. - Daryl 64 months ago
