The Primary versus Secondary Stock Markets

The purchase of common stock in an IPO (initial public offering) is facilitated through the use of members an investment bank underwriting syndicate or selling group. This is known as the primary market and the proceeds of sale go directly to the issuing company.

BUT - What is the Secondary Stock Market?

Many thanks.

This is an excellent write up of the differences between primary and secondary markets. Please let me know if you want me to summarize the article, I realize everyone has limited time.

So, the secondary market provides liquidity to those who acquired securities in the primary market. After an investor has acquired securities in the primary market, s/he wants to be able to sell the securities at some point in the future in order to acquire other securities, buy a house, or go on a vacation. Such a sale takes place in the secondary market. - Dr. David E. 64 months ago

The primary market is where a company sells its stock directly to investors and collects the capital.

The secondary market is where a stock in a company is sold by a owner of that stock and the owner collects what it was sold for but no money goes into the company.

JOHN C. BOGLE R.I.P [Age 89]

I attended medical school in Philadelphia back in the day, which was not far from Malvern; PA.

So, I was thrilled to have the occasion to actually visit and tour Vanguard Headquarters.

I was not able to meet Mr. Bogle but I am very grateful to him.
