Most important element in managing the costs of patient population?

I don't think that data analytics are the most important item in population health management. If a primary objective is to manage costs, provider organizations have to aggregate enough lives where they can be actuarialy sound. This would take at least 100,000 lives. A quarter million would be better. Once we have an adequate population size, the most important item is to manage the ultra high utilizers. These patients are not hard to find. We see them every month. It is not an analytics problem: It is a care management problem.

One point of critical need but not #1 depending on the state of population health. Care management is another critical element as you point out.

Data analytics can do much more than find patients that are “outliers” from a cost perspective. It can give insights into a care plan that “fits the patient” and provides long term cost savings by promoting overall wellness.

If we could build programs and keep people out of the hospitals, we can reduce the total cost of care. Those savings are astronomical - Dr. David E. 64 months ago
