Disruptive Innovations disrupted

There are a number of paradoxes that exist in Disruptive Innovations space. I am interested in learning about companies or industries which have survived disruptive innovations in the 2.0 version to become a standard in the 3.0 version. Basically fashion products which went out of fashion becoming fashionable once again.

Hi Balaji

I guess you seek case studies for your MBA pgm.

Allow me to first qualify that while it maybe useful to look deep into the past, my take with the ongoing S-curve disruption is fundamentally there are vast differences. The rules have changed significantly causing the discontinuity. In the Industrial Age, we grew up in a world of scarcity. Yet in the Digital Sharing economy or Industrialisation 4.0 era, we now live in a world of abundance because of ubiquitous connectivity. This shift is fundamental.

With this as my mental model, I will recommend you look at 2 global organisations that is redefining their core business - Statoil to become Equinor & Philip Morrise International (PMI).

Equinor is shifting from Oil & Gas to Renewables. PMI is shifting from cigarettes to IQOZ. I believe they will make for good, relevant and current case studies to meet your needs.

Would you include in your opportunities list companies like Siemens who have developed an innovation culture involving both internal ideation sources and external collaborations to produce new products and services? I would propose to you that those companies that excel with their willingness to try innovation methods, both internally and externally, are transforming themselves from version 2.0 to 3.0 by mere adoption of the methods and processes of innovation.

Watch for Apple to transform itself beyond its core product offerings and how it goes about it, or it will be acquired or merge with another company thus negating its past successful methods of driving the markets forward that they serve.

Another possible transformational company could be General Electric, now struggling to find its sweet spot and reinvent itself. It appears that they have pockets of innovation but have not figured out the workable formula for harnessing ideation into their routine operations. GE used to be a model for generation 1.0 research and development leading to innovative new products and services, then they tried to acquire companies to expand the depth of their portfolio, but lost the spark of innovation (or their internal methods did not transfer to the acquisitions).

All of the telecommunications companies worldwide are examples of companies faced with continuously attempting to successfully navigate the waves of technological breakthroughs. Some will make the transformation, while others will likely be absorbed by competitors to further their market opportunities.

Companies investigating and investing is Artificial Intelligence in its many forms are faced with trying to recalibrate the investments versus returns that previous drove financial decisions. They are also faced with harnessing their data stores to improve their market performance or to decide to move into adjacent or address newer opportunities.

I would suggest that your title of disrupted innovations disrupted is becoming a more prevalent reality for several markets. Oil companies needing to expand or transform into renewable energy providers, or whether technological breakthroughs such as fusion put them out of business altogether if they do not prepare for it. Healthcare companies will need to accommodate genetic engineering and gene therapy whereby a patient's own body is re-engineered to heal itself thus eliminating surgeries or long term drug needs. The auto industry is struggling with electric car solutions, and tied to the future path of the energy producers. There are examples at a macro level, and I am sure there are several at the micro level as well waiting to be discovered.
