Perhaps the most important element in garnering alignment in a matrix organization is to determine the overriding objective(s) of the matrix. Ethics are an important element in defining the alignment in matrix organization Once the mission/objective(s) are defined, then the players in the matrix can set about to accomplish the objectives. Innovation & design thinking are paramount to create strategies for success.

The mission of a matrix can be long & short term. Utilizing the critical thinking, visual thinking & design problem solving abilities of the individual players on each team can be an asset to growing team leadership. Creative time lines to meet objectives that consider budgets & tasks to be accomplished can bring the team(s) together in the matrix to set about accomplishing the long term & short tern goals to grow the organization.

Growing leaders is key in this process of building alignment.

I support Kelly Ann's comments. In matrix organisations I have participated on several levels, I have found success in clear definitions of roles, responsibility and deliverables in all dimensions of the matrix. Further, the development of 'Centers of Excellence' allows the matrix participants to identify and build on 'What's in it for me'.
