Will small scale generation make things better or worse for an antiquated energy grid?

With fluctuating renewable sources constantly entering the U.S. energy grid, do we want to add many smaller scale components, or is it more beneficial to make a few larger generation components flexible? What is best for a future, efficient, flexible, and reliable grid?

It really depends what is your objective. if you add more small scale generating resources then It would be quite difficult to efficiently manage them however a biggest advantage of small scale generation is, if any one generating resource has got problem and shuts down then It will cut down huge amount of load into Grid.

As security of energy assets becomes more important people will move to smaller generation which adds in value in other ways to include less line losses to consumer of the power. Community micro-grids, EVs and energy independence may be the initial push that moves us in this direction. Being able to isolate faults to smaller areas of service proves a great value in situations of extended down-time.
