The UC Elkus Ranch Center Director, County Director (CD), and Advisor requires both administrative and programmatic leadership emphasizing cross-disciplinary research in agroecology and environmental education in San Mateo & San Francisco Counties and across the state. Directing Elkus Ranch involves developing programs, overseeing facilities, operations, budgeting, marketing, supervising staff, and essential fund development. CD for SM/SF Counties responsibilities include fiscal and programmatic oversight of all County extension programs jointly performed by 6 advisors and 30+ staff, as well as maintaining relations with County governing boards and staff. Advisor conducts applied research on natural and cropping systems, insect species (predator/prey), host plants (crops/weeds), and extends info to local communities (youth, public, growers, naturalists). Practical applications include reducing pesticide (insecticide and herbicide) use, conserving native species, and growing citizen scientific literacy in a world faced with accelerated global change.
The position conducts a research and education program on the ecological basis of biological control and ecosystem services across a diverse urban-to-rural landscape. The extension of this work includes providing expertise in entomology and scientific basis for ecosystem stewardship for citizen science project development. Areas of participatory research and education for youth and adults include biological control (pest management in rangelands & crops), pollination (commercial and native), biodiversity conservation, and content support for the UC CA Naturalist ANR Statewide Program. By developing and promoting scientific and agricultural literacy primarily through youth-based participatory research and environmental stewardship programs, this position has a pivotal role in initiating, contributing to, and developing management strategies to maintain and restore natural resources and ecosystem services.
