Times, Chicago Tribune, Orlando Sentinel), Chicago Sun-Times Content Agency
For 25 years, I have lived and worked by these principles:
To produce professional content with authority, passion and verve.
To motivate journalists and content specialists to do their very best work, and build first-rate teams where every player has a chance to grow, shine and have fun.
To expunge "impossible" from the dictionary.
To employ the Golden Rule in all I do.
To zig when everyone else is zagging.
My principles and skills in action:
* Created Money College, a personal finance site for college students, and the only successful project in AOL's "Seed" experiment of 2010. I recruited/supervised 3 dozen freelance journalists and generated many of the assignments, including a five-part series on skyrocketing tuitions. Within a month of launch, Money College obtained a $50,000-a-month sponsorship from Sallie Mae.
* Created and wrote "On the Small Screen," a nationally syndicated DVD column where I interviewed Oliver Stone, Jason Alexander, Betty White, John Cleese, Helen Mirren, Bob Newhart and countless other entertainment luminaries.
* In a pioneering project for online journalism, worked in conjunction with WGBH in Boston to create an interactive timeline of every major event in Pope John Paul II's life. This earned me a Chicago Tribune Innovator Award.
* Wrote a textbook on journalism ("Tap Your Passion: The Art and Heart of Reporting & Writing") used by students I've taught at two universities. Praised by the likes of James McBride ("The Color of Water").
